Insurance Needs for Your Small Business

Owning a small business can be unpredictable, as with anything in life. This is why insurance coverage can be vital to the health of any business. Businesses, small or large, are required, especially in Louisiana, to carry certain types of insurance coverage. So, what types of insurances should business owners consider for their business?

Common Types of Business Insurances and Coverage:

Business Liability Insurance Coverage – This type of coverage often deals with claims regarding property damage or bodily harm. Typical examples of claims include slip and fall situations. Say someone slips and falls inside your business after the floors have just been mopped. Business liability insurance will cover most medical expenses accrued as a result of the incident. These types of policies are particularly important for small businesses, depending on the severity of the claim.

Worker’s Compensation Insurance – This type of coverage includes helping to cover medical treatment/expenses after a workplace injury or disability benefits for employees that cannot work. Benefits could possibly be given to families of employees who die due to a workplace-related injury or illness.

Business Income Insurance – This type of insurance can cover the loss of income while the business is closed as a result of significant damage to the property. Business income insurance could mean the difference between closing the business doors for good or getting the business up and running as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Property Insurance Coverage – These types of policies cover damage to business property and assets as a result of events such as major storms, fires, earthquakes, etc. This type of coverage is recommended alongside business income insurance.

Umbrella Insurance Coverage – For many business liability insurance policies, the amount covered only reaches so much. This is where umbrella insurance policies come in. These types of policies will extend the liability claims so that small business owners can rest easy knowing they are covered in most situations.
