Stay Safe During This Year’s Hurricane Season

The Hurricane season started June 1, and runs through November 30; about half the year. This season, the activity is expected to be either normal or above normal, with a certainty of about 75%. Coming up on hurricane season, many residents of Louisiana play it safe and purchase flood insurance to be sure they are prepared in case their home takes on water. Unfortunately, getting federal flood insurance might not be possible soon. In recent news, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has yet to be reauthorized, with the deadline approaching at the end of the July.

What does this mean for buyers? Well, in the case of the NFIP being unauthorized, previous contract holders will still receive coverage, according to the Department of Homeland Security. However, unless the program is reauthorized by 11:59 pm on July 31, 2018 there will not be any new policies authorized, nor any previous policies renewed. The National Association of Realtors estimates that the NFIP lapse will result in approximately 40,000 home sale closings each month. Of course, while the hope is always that no major flooding occurs, as little as two inches of water can cost as much as $10,000 in damages. And historical data has shown that Louisiana is a high-risk region for flooding.
