Your Guide To Insurance After Marriage

JUST MARRIED!

Before Valentine’s Day, we informed you on how to insure your beloved’s new, valuable engagement ring. Now, comes the fun part! Once you are engaged, you have a lot to plan for. You should be planning for changes to your insurance and other important accounts. You can focus on this after you get back from the honeymoon, but it should be a priority once all the fun stuff is over.

Your car insurance and health insurance are prone to changes now that you are married. For both car and health insurance, make sure there are no overlaps in your policies since you are combining coverage. Speak with an agent at AWS to add your spouse to your car insurance. Typically, it is cheaper to share car insurance with your partner as opposed to having two separate policies.

Look at your home insurance. If you and your partner just moved in together, you have twice the amount of stuff now. Create an updated home inventory to account for your new possessions. In addition to having more belongings, you also have those wedding bands to think about! Make sure you insure those.

If you changed your name after tying the knot, you have some business to attend to. One of the first important documents you will want to update is your social security card. You’ll need your social security card to update other records such as your driver’s license. Don’t forget to report to your creditors that your name has been changed! Additionally, as a married person, you should update the “beneficiary” and “next of kin” for your social security benefits. If applicable, review your will and power of attorney.

Do you have questions about what changes in insurance for married couples? Our experts at AWS Insurance know that it can be confusing to figure out how to combine policies. We’ll evaluate your options and decide what is best for you and your family.
