Insurance Coverage For Students – Back to School Tips – New Orleans

It’s that time of the year again, whether your young student is going out-of-state for college or staying locally, they will need proper insurance coverage. With student tuition being as high as it is these days, you want to minimize university expenses as much as possible, and that includes opting out for university insurance plans.

Through your local insurance agent, you can find a package coverage policy for health insurance, homeowner’s insurance, renter’s insurance, and more at a monthly premium exponentially lower than university plans, without skipping out on coverage. With open enrollment under the Healthcare Marketplace just around the corner, it’s never been a better time to start looking for excellent health insurance coverage, and homeowner’s insurance or renter’s insurance to protect your student’s belongings. Although policy information still varies by state, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine the right insurance for students.

Insurance Coverage Options For Students

 Renter’s Insurance for Students

Renter’s Insurance: for college students living in university dorms or off-campus housing, renter’s insurance for students is a necessity to protect your belongings in the event someone breaks into your apartment or dorm and makes away with your stuff. Although your landlord may have homeowner’s insurance, this policy coverage only protects the property structure itself – not your stuff. If you find you and your friends are enjoying each other’s company too much and someone gets accidentally injured on the property, renter’s insurance can also protect you from liability in the event of a lawsuit.

Health Insurance for Students

Health Insurance: even if you’re leaving home for college, you are not immune from falling ill or being the victim of a serious accident. With a health insurance coverage plan for students, you can protect yourself financially and physically without having to worry. Without health insurance, an overnight stay at the hospital can cost you thousands. Depending on your budget and healthcare needs, there are a variety of different options you can take advantage of with small and large deductibles that each feature various networks of doctors available to you.

Car Insurance for Students

Car Insurance: depending on whether your student is leaving home for college or staying in the area, you may qualify for special discounts for your car insurance. Let’s review some of these options:

Coverage with a car at school: if the vehicle in question remains on the parent’s account with the insurance carrier and the student is enlisted as the driver of the vehicle, then coverage does apply. However, you need to ensure that the insurance carrier coverage also is available in that state.

Coverage with no car at school: if your student does not have a vehicle at school, but will be returning over the holidays or break to drive, then the student should remain on your car insurance coverage. However, if your student’s school is over 100 miles from your home and they are not taking the vehicle, you may qualify for a distant-student discount.

Coverage for driving another vehicle while at school: if your student remains on the main policy as an insured driver, then the student would be insured while driving another vehicle. If the vehicle belongs to a friend, that person’s car insurance would remain the primary coverage with your student’s as secondary coverage.

In addition to these various coverage options, having an enrolled student in your car insurance policy can also provide student discounts on your monthly premium. To qualify, the student must be enrolled at least full time with 12 credit hours as well as meet certain academic qualifications. Thanks for explaining the different options available for car insurance policies for students! My son is getting ready to head off to college, and I realized I didn’t know how the insurance policy on his car would change. It’s good to know that as long as the insurance carrier coverage is available in that state, then it will still apply.
