August: The Deadliest Month on the Road

What do you think the most dangerous day on the road is? Popular guesses might be New Year’s Eve, Super Bowl Sunday, or even Mardi Gras. However, the most dangerous day on the road turns out to be an unassuming day at the beginning of August. August 2nd, in fact. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety based its calculations on fatalities from 2012 to 2016 and discovered that a total of 505 people were killed on that day during the period. The entire month of August, however, is a deadly month on the road. That is, a car wreck is more likely to fatal during the month of August.

So, what makes the entire month of August so deadly? When we think of New Year’s Eve, Super Bowl Sunday and Mardi Gras, we think of careless partiers who take to the roads after having had way too much to drink. We don’t typically make this association with August 2nd or the entire month of August, for that matter. The roads during August are filled, packed even, with vacationers trying to soak up the last month of summer. Summer vacation, sunny skies and the determination to make the most out of the remaining summer days create a scenario where drivers are a little more carefree.

The factors that go into creating the perfect formula for a wreck are fast acceleration, hard brakes and idle time. These are three key things that determine whether somebody is more likely to be in an accident. Having a carefree attitude can undoubtedly lead to this dangerous driving habits.
